Overtime Calculator

Calculate overtime pay for the week. Enter your hourly rate and total hours worked to see regular pay, overtime pay at time and a half, and total gross pay.

Formula

Overtime hours = hours worked − 40 (if positive). Overtime rate = hourly rate × 1.5. Total = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × overtime rate.

Example: 45 hours at $20 an hour. Regular pay is 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime is 5 hours at $30 (1.5 × $20) = $150. Total gross pay is $950.00.

Frequently asked questions

When does overtime start under federal law?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires covered, non-exempt employees to be paid overtime for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, at not less than one and a half times their regular rate of pay.

Does federal law require daily overtime?

No. The FLSA looks at the workweek. It does not require overtime for weekends, holidays or days of rest unless the hours push the week over 40. Some states, such as California, add daily overtime rules, so check your state's labor department.

Can I change the multiplier or the threshold?

Yes. Use a multiplier of 2 for double time, or change the weekly threshold if your state or contract sets a different one. The defaults are the federal rules: 40 hours and 1.5x.

Is this my take-home pay?

No. The result is gross pay before taxes and deductions. Overtime is taxed like other wages.

Who is exempt from overtime?

Some salaried employees, such as certain executive, administrative and professional roles, are exempt. Exemption depends on duties and salary, not on a job title. Check with the U.S. Department of Labor or your employer.
